Notary Basics

What ID Do I Need to Get a Document Notarized in Arizona?

The most common reason a notarization can't be completed is an ID problem. Here is exactly what Arizona notaries can accept, so you show up ready.

What counts as acceptable ID

Arizona law requires a notary to confirm your identity with a current government-issued ID that includes your photo, signature, and physical description. The forms most people use are:

  • Arizona driver license or state ID card (or a license from another U.S. state)
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • Foreign passport, provided it includes a photo and signature
  • U.S. military ID
  • Permanent resident card (green card)

Does the ID have to be current?

Yes. Expired identification cannot be used, even if it expired last week. If you know your license has lapsed, renew it or bring a valid passport before scheduling. This is the single most common reason a mobile notary has to leave without completing a signing.

What if the name on my ID doesn't match the document?

The name on your ID needs to reasonably match the name you're signing. Minor differences, such as a missing middle initial, are usually fine. A completely different last name after a marriage or divorce is a problem. In that case, bring your ID plus the legal document that connects the two names, or have the document prepared in the name that matches your ID.

What if I don't have any ID?

Arizona allows a notary to identify a signer through a credible witness: someone who personally knows you, has valid ID themselves, and is willing to swear to your identity. This comes up most often with elderly clients in hospitals or care facilities. If this applies to you, tell us when you book so we can walk the witness through what's required.

Does every signer need ID?

Yes. If a document has three signers, all three need acceptable ID present at the time of signing. Witnesses to a will or trust also need ID.

Quick checklist before your appointment

  1. Your ID is unexpired and the photo still looks like you.
  2. The name on your ID matches the name on the document.
  3. Every person signing has their own ID.
  4. You have not signed the document yet. Sign in front of the notary.
